For the past two weeks I have been nestled in BC’s beautiful Fraser Valley. Performances on the agenda? Harrison Festival of the Arts ( July 12), Chilliwack Museum (July 15), Aldergrove Fair Days, (July 16) and Mission Folk Music Festival (July 22).
Today, I just spent several hours collaborating with an excellent crew of musicians to create the Canada 150 piece to showcase at the Mission Folk Music Fest. Beautiful violinists Emilyn Stam (www.emilynstam.com) and Jennie Bice (www.jenniebice.com), alongside Italian accordionist Filippo Gambetta (www.filippogambetta.com) are the superb trio I get the privilege of performing with. I felt my skin tingle as I heard, for the first time, beautiful musical underscoring to original a capella tunes I regularly use during my story shows. It was magic. Joining us on stage will be First Nation’s rapper and poet Ronnie Dean Harris and long time Mission resident and newspaper columnist Ken Herar, filling in the story of the Indo-Canadian settlers in the Mission Region.
Together, we sat in the funky space of Harrison Hammond BnB, nestled on 25 acres of farmland in Kilby, BC. When we got there, none us knew what we were in for. By the end, we were well on our way to creating a beautiful show weaving music, storytelling, poetry, and history together.
SO! If you’re in the Fraser Valley at 2pm on Saturday, July 22, 2017 – Come see the show!
